After finally breaking No. 97 ranked Elena Vesnina's serve in the final game of the second set, Victoria Azarenka of Belarus tossed her towels into the stand and teased fans before happily signing autographs for them.

The post-match Azarenka appeared much more genial than Azarenka during the match.  She slashed her racket at the ground and swatted balls away angrily after some big mistakes.  Azarenka said she was simply trying to refocus her attitude toward the game with these outbursts. 

“For me, sometimes it helps to be more alert, to be more aggressive after (the point),” she said.  “I was just not happy sometimes because it wasn’t going my way.”

Despite the adversity, Azarenka eventually won on Lotus Court in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3, to move on to the quarterfinals of the 2012 China Open.

Azarenka may have won the match, but Vesnina proved to be no easy out. 

“I didn’t expect her to be that aggressive,” Azarenka said.  “She’s always trying to take control, but she was really going for every shot there was today.” 

 The score belies a well-played match by both combatants.  Azarenka and Vesnina had 15 winners each, on both miracle shots and well-orchestrated breakdowns of their opponent’s defense. Vesnina had far more unforced errors than Azarenka, but Azarenka accumulated nine double faults compared to the Russian’s five, and three of those five came in the first game of the second set. 

That game marked the low point of the match for Vesnina. Vesnina gave herself opportunities to win all day, but Azarenka proved, once again, that her No. 1 ranking is no fluke.  In the last game of the second set, Vesnina showed her talent and her heart.  She fought tooth, nail, eyelash and taste bud for some way out of the game with the win, but Azarenka shut her down.  That game went through six deuce points before Vesnina finally lost on two consecutive unforced errors.

Next, Azarenka will play Romina Oprandi of Switzerland for a spot in the semifinals.
