Mascot • World Cup Willie
The first World Cup mascot was Willie the lion, which was hugely successful and was pioneering in the use of mascots for major world sporting events. The lion is a typical symbol of the UK (although the tournament took place only in England), and Willie wears a Union Flag jersey with the words "WORLD CUP".
Poster
A glorious year for England, which hosted and won the tournament, 1966 was also the first tournament to have an official mascot, Willie the Lion. And the poster is firmly focused on the furry beast, who's lumping the ball into row Z.
Ball • Challenge 4-star
The Challenge 4-stars was a ball with high quality leather and entirely hand sewn. It was composed of 25 rectangular panels, joined together in a way that was very similar to the 1958 ball and which differed only in the panel which contained the valve. In the challenge 4-star ball the valve was in the centre of a small panel between two other, even shorter, panels. The remaining panels were the same as the 1958 ball and the inflating system was the latest type valve - latex rubber.
