Стандарты журналистской этики - case study part two

Title: Andrei Zhurankov comments on Eurosport Russia

Dear Sir/Madam,

I'm writing to you as a blogger on a popular Russian language sports website called sports.ru and would like to start off with sincere admiration of the Eurosport coverage of various events throughout the years. I've been a loyal fan for a very long time. You do have a great team in place and I've thoroughly enjoyed you coverage of tennis, soccer, figure skating, even the World Strongest man competition:) I watched Eurosport in both Russian and English over the years.

But the last few days the name of your channel was mentioned in Russian press and blogs with a strongly negative connotation. I'm not sure if you are aware that the Russian language figure skating commentator has decided to subject the viewers to his opinions on whether in fact, Olympic and World  Champion Evgeni Plushenko back surgery in Israel was fake or simply a publicity stunt. Note that these comments were made during a totally different competition in which Evgeni did not participate and literally came out of the blue. The commentator literally stated the following "I think that the surgery never happened" (in Russian - Я считаю, что никакой операции не было). Now, I'm not sure what his motivation was, but it certainly was unconnected to the event he was covering as well as had very little basis. Little wonder that Mr. Plushenko is going going to sue for defamation, given the fact that it's established beyond any reasonable doubt that the surgery did take place.

What I would like know (as well as a lot of Russian fans that wrote and commented about it my blog, as well as many others) is where does Eurosport stand on this and whether it condones such an action from ethical standpoint. Note that I feel strongly that the right to free speech should be protected, but it seems clear that the commentator went way beyond simply expressing his opinion and used Eurosport brand as a way to legitimize his claims.

Thanks in advance,

 О результатах доложу:)
