1. Find the beauty in the struggle.
I’ve been playing tennis since I was a little girl, and it was the one thing I felt I could excel at the most. But setbacks are part of life, no matter what profession you’re in. One of the things that makes sports victories so great is going through some of the tougher times—the challenges, injuries, and losses. As women, it’s a powerful feeling to be good at what you do, but I think the motivation is sometimes in focusing on your ambitions and trying to be even better.
2. Supplement your weaknesses with strengths.
Staying in shape comes with my lifestyle, but when I’m injured, I can’t do my usual workouts. Running, speedwork, circuit training, and cardio are especially hard to replicate with leg injuries.
When I’m injured, I try to keep my core strong with exercises on a physioball or BOSU ball. Whether you’re an athlete or not, your core drives the center of your body. In everything I do, I think about my breathing and keeping my core tight, even if I’m working on leg exercises. It’s like an extra workout.
3. Enjoy the unexpected benefits of a challenge.
It’s very rare that I get to be at a friend’s birthday party, but during my off-time, I got that chance. I also got to go Paris Fashion Week—it was my first time going to ready-to-wear shows. I love traveling, getting lost in a city, and finding little spots and creperies.
4. Do your best to stay positive.
Sometimes we forget that life would be pretty boring if everything happened the way we thought it would. That’s one of the things that can help when you’re anxious, on edge, or feeling the pressure. Those are the moments when I really have to deliver and rise up to the challenge. Everyone gets anxious about the unknown, but it can stimulate something in your mind that says, “This is meaningful, I need to step up.”
5. Rely on a mantra.
There’s this great Japanese proverb I recently came across which says, “Fall down seven times, get up eight.” I love it because to me, true strength is about not wavering, no matter what life throws at me. Staying patiently focused on the long-term benefit has been my key to bouncing back, both physically and emotionally.
