How much do the people of Mumbai know about India's sports stars? Less than Maria Sharapova, apparently
Maria Sharapova doesn’t know who Sachin Tendulkar is, you indignantly exclaim? She would still come off as the most knowledgeable person in the world when compared with Tendulkar’s fellow citizens.
In a damning video shot by Being Indian, the people of Mumbai were exposed for their utter lack of knowledge of their own celebrated sports stars. Pankaj Advani ‘obviously plays chess’, goes one clueless guy. Another one confidently proclaims that Mahesh Bhupathi plays a mysterious new sport called ‘Olympic’. Narain Karthikeyan is apparently a cricketer, although the lady who says that doesn’t know ‘which IPL team he plays for’.
The worst, however, seems reserved for the country’s football stars. Most of the people interviewed give intensely blank stares when asked about Sunil Chhetri, while one enthusiastic guy brands Bhaichung Bhutia as either a tennis or snooker player (note the wildly broad spectrum that he covers).
We know – we too had a hard time believing that anybody could be this ignorant. But a video doesn’t lie, and the responses that the clip below has recorded left us shaking our heads and trying desperately not to cringe.

Tennis: Indian Badminton player Jwala Gutta has called Maria Sharapova and Sachin Tendulkar controversy stupid and she believes it is fair if the Russian Tennis star does not know the Cricket legend.
Tendulkar had watched a few matches from the Royal Box at Wimbledon and when asked about cricket legend, the Russian beauty had said at a press conference that she did not know about him, causing a furore among Indian cricket fans.
"Cricket is played in 12 countries. Tennis is played in 200 countries and badminton in 150 countries. These are simple facts that I told you. Nobody even knows what cricket is in the US. You can't really blame Sharapova, don't know why it's a big controversy."
"The controversy was really stupid. What is wrong if she does not know Tendulkar? Of course it's fair enough," Jwala said on the sidelines of a student felicitation programme at the Science City Auditorium.
"I don't know many footballers except Maradona and Messi. Please don't create a Sharapova like controversy," she pleaded before adding: "I am not really following the World Cup due to the scheduling as I've practice in the morning.
