Q&A with Maria Sharapova

Life is sweet for the tennis pro with the launch of Sugarpova, her new candy line.

You’ve always had a sweet tooth – and now you have created Sugarpova, a premium candy line. What are some of your favourite types of candy?

As a child, I was awarded a Chupa Chups lollipop after a good practice, and that consideration of candy as the ultimate reward has never gone away for me.  I am a self-confessed sweet tooth, but as an athlete, I try to keep it in moderation and go for something lighter like gummie candies. My very favourite flavour of Sugarpova is Quirky – a rainbow toffee with a creamy marshmallow centre. They are amazing.

You’re involved in all aspects of the business. From conception to product testing, why was it important for you to launch something from scratch?

I think consumers and shoppers are very bright, and they can tell when something feels authentic. For me, I have approached the candy business the same way that I have approached my tennis career. I don’t want to do something unless I am going to give it 100 per cent of my dedication and drive.  For Sugarpova, that means being there for all the major moments, start to finish, and being an active part of every decision made.

What has it been like balancing a growing business alongside your tennis career?

It’s really rewarding. I have worked alongside so many well-established brands for so long in an ambassador-like capacity. It’s so fulfilling to own something and watch it grow from the ground up. The balance is forever a work in progress, but the long flights associated with my tennis career give me lots of opportunities to focus on business needs. I feel very fortunate to be able to pursue both passions.

How did the name ‘Sugarpova’ come about?

It was a very organic process, and, happily my last name lent itself to this venture perfectly.

The candy designs are so quirky and bright - where does your inspiration come from?

I am extremely inspired by fashion and design. The design of the candy and packaging were just as important to me as the taste.  The market is saturated with candies that feel corporate and not as personal. The bright, happy Sugarpova designs are a reflection of both my personality and what I think candy should be.

A portion of proceeds from the business is going to the Maria Sharapova Foundation. Could you tell us more about the foundation?

Of course. Given my Russian heritage, I am passionate about helping those still feeling the effects of Chernobyl. I am also a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and they were dedicated enough to partner with my foundation to launch a new scholarship program for students in the Chernobyl-affected areas of Belarus.
