- Czech had terrible team. They were behind Finland, Sweden and Russia in every aspect of game by large margin. Usually Czech provides skilled forwards but no one really showed good offensive skills. Forwards could pass on the offensive zone but they had lot of problems of getting shots to the net, usually they just banged the boards. Goalie Pavel Francouz was solid behind bad defence which covered the front of goal well but left way too much space for shooting sector. Defence-men were also quite slow and were forced to take lot of penalties and they allowed 7 powerplay goals just in 3 games. Bad team, bad coaching, can’t expect much from them in WJC.
- Russia disappointed me, I was expecting them to compete equally with Sweden. Their biggest problem was typical Russian problem in junior level, selfishness. Most skilled players in the tournament were Russians but these tarasenkos, kuznetsovs and kitsyns didn’t waive the puck until it was too late. Lines had zero chemistry because of this and numerous giveaways caused few goals against them. Other big problem was Russia’s system, playbook or whatever you call it. Despite having good puck moving defence men and fast/skilled forward they had huge troubles getting set to attack. Well coached teams Sweden and Finland covered the neutral zone so well that Russians didn’t have a clue how to break it as a team. Usually Chudinov, Orlov or some skilled forward carried the puck to the offensive zone by themselves. Forwards in this tournament weren’t good enough to provide consistent offence. Underagers are indeed talented and they played in the leading role in top two lines but they weren’t good enough to be gamebreakers in U20 level. Russia is going to need strengthening to the WJC.
- Finland played good tournament although they run out of gas in the final game. Jortikka seems like good fit for coaching job and Finns had good system that worked well on both ways of game, defensive and offensive. But there were some issues how players carried out the system. On defence Finland is lacking good defensive D-man, Sami Vatanen needs one by his side. Teemu Eronen had lot of troubles in own zone and it made Vatanen look bad too. I hope Jyri Niemi is the answer in WJC. But solid and physical defensive defence-men in lower pairings, those are Finns lacking. Vittasmдki and Niemelд are two options but Vittasmдki is more of a third pairing guy and Niemelд looked slow and especially slow minded in Sweden game.
On offence, Granlund line was very good at getting the puck to the zone, keeping it there and creating big part of Finns scoring chances but they scored just one even strength goal. Granlund created chances, Vatanen rolled the play on blueline and they got +20 mins ice time on every game but just one ES goal. I’m not sure if Hartikainen is good fit alongside Granlund and Pulkkinen. Hartikainen always parked his ass in front of net or played along the boards and it limited Granlund’s and Pulkkinen’s movement and passing lanes. With Rajala that line was so good because they moved so well and were all over the ice and they were very hard to defend against. Now Hartikainen didn’t move his feet and stayed near the goal which limited greatly that lines play. Also none of them is true speedster who could create chances just by speeding by defenders, Rajala would bring that feature. On powerplay that line was able to roll the puck faster and Hartikainen’s play in front of new gained lot more than on ES, 3 powerplay goals and some nice clap clap passing.
- Sweden was the best team in the tournament, quite clearly though Finland almost defeated them in final match. Two key factors for Sweden: goaltending and defence. Defence’s top4 (Erixon, Rundblad, Larsson, Ekman-Larsson) was very steady in own zone and provided good offence. All 4 were, let’s say, in top7 of tournaments best d-men. That was biggest key to victory. Smallish players from opponents had hard time to compete with bigger Swedes and another case, those bigger Swedes were also better skaters. Finns coach Hannu Jortikka has commented before that Sami Vatanen in amazing skater both so are three Skellefteе defence-men who are also 15 cm longer. Kind of unfair . On paper Sweden has very good offence too, 8 NHL draftees, but on ice they didn’t find good line combinations and it cost them little bit. Don’t know why Marts didn’t juggle lines. Despite finding working line combinations Sweden’s pure talent helped them to score most goals (D support on offence was also big factor).
