Nicklas Lidstrom: Ovechkin is the best Russian, but Malkin will win Hart Trophy
Detroit Red Wings defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom revealed his thoughts on the NHL’s Russian contingent in an interview to Sovetsky sport.
«I am hopeful that there will be a preseason tournament between KHL and NHL clubs at some point. Many NHL players have moved to Russia, the KHL is the second best hockey league in the world.»
«Who is the best Russian player?»
«Ovechkin. Perhaps he didn’t do too well this season, but when he comes on the ice, you have to watch out. It’s very hard to play against him.»
«You could have named Pavel Datsyuk.»
«Datsyuk is incredibly versatile, he works in the offence and the defence. I didn’t name him, because as a teammate, I know what an immense asset he is, but don’t play against him.»
«Who do you think will get the Hart Memorial trophy?»
«Steve Stamkos will be voted MVP of the tournament, he’s had a great year. Or maybe Malkin. One of those two, let me think… Probably Malkin. He’s been dragging the Penguins on his shoulders throughout the season, especially during Crosby’s absence.»
Commenting on Alexander Radulov’s return to the NHL, Lidstrom expressed his surprise at how quickly the move was finalised.
«I expected him to go through the waivers first, but that didn’t happen. We had to waive one of our goaltenders and he got snapped up by the Islanders, so it does seem rather unjust. Especially with the deadline having passed, so team’s can’t trade, but the Preds could,» the Swede added.
