Overworked in pre-season – Rodgers confirmed during the summer that the players carried out double training sessions during pre-season in an attempt to hit the ground running. It has certainly paid dividends with the club starting games well.
However, have the players been overworked due to pre-season and the travelling involved? Steven Gerrard admitted it was the toughest pre-season he had been involved with during his time at the club. The Liverpool players could simply feeling the effects of this in the second half of games.
Gerrard and Lucas – Gerrard and Lucas have a key responsibility in central midfield to press and hound players in midfield whilst protecting the back four. Both players, due to age and previous injuries, can fade in games and have less mobility. They also are very rarely rested or even substituted in games.
It is one of the reasons why Jordan Henderson has been so important as he offers additional cover for these two players with his constant pressing and running – although even Henderson looked tired against Swansea. It would be difficult for him to carry on like this all season.
Change in tactics – Rodgers has previously said he would like to play possession-based football in order to ‘kill off the opposition’. The tactics have been somewhat different to what Rodgers has wanted previously.
He has admitted he has worked on his players to soak up pressure and then to break quickly on the counter. This has worked in parts this season with Liverpool in the lead at half time and then dropping back in the second half. This change in tact could explain why Liverpool have surrendered so much possession in the second half and created less chances.
Unfit Daniel Sturridge – Sturridge missed almost the entire pre-season period and has struggled with thigh injuries this season. Despite that, he leads the line well and has scored in every game. However, even Sturridge has faded in games due to his fitness issues and lack of pre-season work. It has meant less running and pressing from Sturridge which in turn affects our overall performance.
