Spartak’s Welliton gets six-match ban for foul on Igor Akinfeev
Vladimir Katkov, the head of the Russian Football Union (RFS) Disciplinary Committee, announced the authority’s decision on the incident that took place during the Matchday 22 game in the Russian Premier League between Spartak Moscow and CSKA Moscow (2:2). The Brazilian forward of the Red-and-Whites Welliton attacked the opponents’ goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev outside the penalty area, after which the goalie landed badly and seriously injured his knee.
«The Welliton case was discussed today at the meeting of the Executive Committee of the RFS, where the entire Disciplinary Committee was invited. In accordance with Article 127 of the RFS Disciplinary Regulations the Executive Committee construed Article 94 of the Disciplinary Regulations. Subsequently, the Disciplinary Committe held a meeting on the issue of Welliton’s sanctioning. Pursuant to Article 94 paragraph 4 Welliton was suspended for six games for rough play that resulted in an injury to the opponent,» Katkov said to the official site of the RFS.
