2014 US Open to feature largest purse in tournament history

A victory at the US Open means securing a place in tennis history and claiming one of the most important titles in the sport. In 2014, it will also translate into one of the richest paydays in tennis history.
The men’s and women’s singles champions at the 2014 US Open will receive a record $3 million, up from $2.6 million a year ago and double what Roger Federer and Serena Williams earned for their championship victories in 2008.
The total prize money awarded at this year’s US Open will be $38.3 million, an 11.7 percent increase over a year ago and a nearly 65 percent increase over three years ago. The total main draw prize money – which includes the men’s and women’s singles, men’s and women’s doubles and mixed doubles – has increased by 12.5 percent from 2013.
“Last year, to recognize the importance of the players and the key role they have in building our sport, the USTA shared our vision to reach $50 million in prize money at the US Open by 2017,” said USTA President and US Open Chairman Dave Haggerty. “This year’s prize money increase continues the commitment to make the US Open one of the most lucrative purses in all of sports.”
To that end, each round of the singles competitions will see at least a 10 percent increase over last year’s record payouts. The round-by-round breakdown for the men’s and women’s singles competitions is as follows (2013 numbers in parentheses):
Wiinner: $3 million ($2.6 million)
Runner-up: $1.45 million ($1.3 million)
Semifinalist: $730,000 ($650,000)
Quarterfinalist: $370,250 ($325,000)
Round of 16: $187,300 ($165,000)
Round of 32: $105,090 ($93,000)
Round of 64: $60,420 ($53,000)
Round of 128: $35,754 ($32,000)
In addition, this year’s doubles champions will receive $520,000 and the mixed doubles champions will earn $150,000. Also, for the first time in 2014, the US Open Qualifying Tournament will offer more than $1.5 million in prize money – an 11 percent increase over 2013.
The 2014 US Open is scheduled for Aug. 25 through Sept. 8, with the US Open Qualifying Tournament beginning on Aug. 19.
