Roman Abramovich sacks Chelsea boss Andre Villas-Boas
Andre Villas-Boas has been sacked by Chelsea after less than a year in charge at Stamford Bridge.
With just three Premier League wins in their last 12 games, a recent defeat to Napoli in the Champions League and an unexpected loss to West Brom brought the axe down on Villas-Boas.
«Unfortunately the results and performances of the team have not been good enough and were showing no signs of improving at a key time in the season,» the Premier League outfit announced on it’s official website
Rumours of the Portuguese manager’s inevitable doom persisted, fuelled by reports that Abramovich tried to take matters into his own hands and went down to the dressing room to speak with the team.
Former Chelsea midfielder Roberto di Matteo, assistant coach under Villas-Boas, will be in charge of the team until the end of the season.
Villas-Boas is now the fifth Chelsea boss to be sacked since Abramovich bought the London club: Claudio Ranieri, Jose Mourinho, Avraam Grant, Luis Felipe Scolari and Carlo Ancelotti were the Russian oligarch’s previous victims.
