SINGAPORE: She may have been afflicted by an injury streak of late but Maria Sharapova insists she is now primed for the WTA Finals in Singapore.
The current world no.3 was speaking on the sidelines of an exhibition match Thursday (Oct 22) played on “Singapore’s first floating tennis platform” on the waters at Clifford Pier, ahead of the season-ending WTA Finals from Oct 25 - Nov 1.
The tournament, which will see eight top female singles and doubles square off, marks Sharapova’s return from two consecutive injuries.
The 28-year-old retired with forearm pain at the China Open last month, after a leg strain kept her out of action since her loss to world No 1 Serena Williams in the Wimbledon semis in July.
I had a bit of a problem in China, admitted Sharapova. But towards the end of the season, it’s no surprise that injuries come up here and there… You have to take care of your body.
The former five-time world No.1 informed an admiring crowd of public and media that the WTA Finals was “personally a really big event” and that she had “done everything to be ready”.
“I haven’t played long, it’s not convenient but I’m healthy now,” Sharapova declared. “I spent the last few weeks healing up, and I came out here early to acclimatise.”
The Russian added: “I had a consistent first half of the year and now it’s the chance for me to get the last few months going.”
Earlier, Sharapova arrived on the floating platform via a bumboat and participated in a mixed-doubles game against retired Asian-American tennis icon Michael Chang.
The two stars paired up with local prospects Angeline Devi Devanthiran, 19, and Shaheed Alam, 17, who represented Singapore at the Southeast Asian Games this year.
