What We Can Learn Tuesday?
Entering play in Moscow on Tuesday, the final three spots for the WTA Finals remain up for grabs and will be decided this week between Angelique Kerber, Lucie Safarova, Flavia Pennetta, Carla Suárez Navarro and Karolina Pliskova.
On Tuesday, both Suárez Navarro and Pliskova will be playing. If Pliskova loses, Bacsinszky is confirmed as an alternate; whether it is first or second alternate would not yet be determined.
Suárez Navarro will play Dominika Cibulkova in her opening match. If Suárez Navarro loses, Kerber will qualify and Bacsinszky will be an alternate (order TBD).
If both Pliskova and Suárez Navarro lose on Tuesday, the WTA Finals field is set with Kerber, Safarova and Pennetta qualifying, although the seeds for Singapore could change based on this week's results. Additionally, if they both lose Tuesday, Bacsinszky and Venus Williams would be the alternates.
From The Outside Looking In
Suárez Navarro and Pliskova enter Moscow at No.11 and No.12, respectively. Suárez Navarro needs to at least reach the final in Moscow to have a chance of moving into the Top 8, while Pliskova will need to win the title for a chance to compete in Singapore.
Looking To Confirm Qualification To Singapore
Kerber withdrew from Moscow (non-acute back pain). She can secure a spot in Singapore if Suárez Navarro loses a match in Moscow. The only scenario in which Kerber does not qualify would be if Suárez Navarro defeats Safarova in the semifinals and Pennetta in the final.
Safarova can confirm qualification by reaching the semifinals or by reaching the quarterfinals if Suárez Navarro does not win the title.
Pennetta can confirm qualification by reaching the final or semifinals if Suárez Navarro does not win the title.
The field for Singapore will also be finalized if both Suárez Navarro loses before the final and Pliskova does not win the title. Although the participants will be confirmed, the seeding will be based on results from this week.
Bacsinszky & Venus Must Wait And See About Alternate Position
Timea Bacsinszky will be an alternate at the WTA Finals unless both Suárez Navarro and Pliskova reach the Moscow final. Venus Williams currently owns the second alternate spot, but can be bumped out if Suárez Navarro reaches the semifinals in Moscow or Pliskova advances to the final.
Scenarios outlined are projections, subject to change based on daily results.
