Li Na to formally announce retirement on the 19th due to knee injuries

On Sept. 18 Beijing time, Sports QQ has reported that an insider's source leaked Li Na's agency IMG will be having a press on Sept. 19 to formally announce Li Na, the Chinese #1's retirement. Tomorrow (19th) is also the opening day for the inaugural Wuhan Tennis Open, so Li has thought well by selecting this time to announce her retirement.

It was told that Li Na's reason for retirement was due to her body unable to continue for a pro career. On Sept. 2, there were pictures on weibo with Li on the plane heading to Munich for doctor's examination. After the examination, it was told that the injury of Li's right knee has increased and her left knee is also injured severely. Due to health concern, Li decided to retire.

Li was born in 1982 at Wuhan, Hubei Province and played tennis since she was 6. She turned pro in 1999 and then went for major in communications in Huazhong University of Science and Technology in 2002. She resumed her pro career in 2004 under the support of her husband, Jiang Shan. In 2008, she reached fourth place in the singles discipline for Beijing Olympics. She reached her first grand slam finals in 2011 at the Australian Open and then went on to win Roland Garros the same year. In 2013, she reached her maiden WTA final. On Jan. 25, 2014, she reached her third Australian Open final and finally clinched the title in singles. On July 31, Li Na announced that she would withdraw from all subsequent tournaments in the US Open swing. Li is the first Asian woman to win a Grand Slam title in singles and has reached the highest ranking (#2) among Asians.
