Agnieszka Radwanska: “It’s a semi-final and I have nothing to lose now”

The Polish player gives the Mutua Madrid Open website an exclusive interview after sealing her semi-final place by beating Caroline Garcia, and speaks about her feelings after making the penultimate round of the Madrid competition for the second time in her career.
World no. 3 Agnieszka Radwanska is just one win away from playing in her first ever Mutua Madrid Open final. Her victory over the tournament’s surprise package, France’s Caroline Garcia, secured her passage to the semi-finals for the second time in her career. Standing in her way of a place in Sunday’s final will be Russia’s Maria Sharapova. The Polish player sat down to talk about her feelings after reaching the semi-finals of one of the most prestigious clay tournaments – one of her weaker surfaces – on the circuit.
Congratulations, you’re in the semi-finals of the Mutua Madrid Open for the second time. How are you feeling?
I’m really happy to be in the semi-final here again. Especially on clay, which is not really my surface. So being in a semi-final in a big event on clay is a great achievement for me.
You had a very complicated match today against Caroline Garcia, did she make you feel uncomfortable on the court?
She’s definitely a very good player and it was a very tight match. Especially as I’ve never played her before and don’t really know her, which is always tricky. I’m sure we’ll see more of her in the future, she’s very young, she serves very well and she is very powerful.
This is your second semi-final at the Mutua Madrid Open and Serena Williams is out with an injury, do you feel that you can win the title?
Serena is gone but there are still a lot of players here who are playing really good tennis. It’s not all about one player there are a lot of players still capable of winning. It’s a semi-final and I have nothing to lose now. Of course I’ll be giving my all to win.
You now meet María Sharapova, a player who has won 9 of your 11 clashes. Will you be thinking about that when you go out on the court?
Not really, every match is different. We played two weeks ago on pretty much the same surface so I’m looking forward to revenge.
