Summer Travel Diary: Tennis Star Maria Sharapova Takes New York

First, the bad news: Tennis great Maria Sharapova was sidelined by an injury this year and unable to compete in the much-anticipated U.S. Open here in New York. The good news? Ever the optimist, the athlete/model/designer (her new accessories line, Sugarpova, hit shelves in Henri Bendel just a few weeks ago) didn’t let that setback keep her from taking a very big bite out of the Big Apple for her summer vacation. Here, she shares her personal photographs from an action-packed trip (which includes everything from eating at a Russian restaurant to a trip to the Guggenheim) and reveals that her legendary stamina is equally as impressive off the court.

My first stop in the city is usually a cut and color at the Anthony Leonard Salon on Madison Avenue—they make everyone feel right at home. Finally: A new, shorter hairdo.

Here I am in Bryant Park. I can’t imagine how deeply frustrating it is for dogs to live in this city. When I bring my Pomeranian Dolce on the road with me, he loves to take trips to the local parks.

When I am in town, I like to visit the Russian restaurant Mari Vanna. I always order the blintze and black tea.

The blintze comes with homemade jam in a pretty, traditional cup!

After all my many trips to New York, this was my first time visiting the Guggenheim Museum. It’s architectural design is beautiful, and I really enjoyed the James Turrell light exhibition.

I visited Cynthia Rowley as she was getting ready to present her spring collection. It’s always fascinating to see the behind-the-scenes work of a designer.

Another thing I love to do is see plays on Broadway. This year’s favorite was Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike.

While I have a few old favorites, I also like to try out new restaurants in town. This time around I went to Korchma Taras Bulba, which had great, traditional Ukrainian food and decor.
