The result seemed inevitable to most of the journalists at Roland Garros but Sharapova insists that she doesn’t carry any mental baggage from her many previous defeats to Williams and she felt that if she had taken some of her chances, the match could have been far closer than her eventual 6-4, 6-4 defeat.
However she insisted there were plenty of positives to take from the fortnight despite the disappointmentof a 14th defeat to the American in 16 matches, and her third of the year.
"I think getting to the Roland Garros final is not too shabby, so I’d say that’s a positive. Coming back as a defending champion, I know it’s never easy to come back with that title, so I’m happy that I was able to produce good tennis within these last two weeks and come to that stage."
Does she have any regrets from the final?
"I don’t have many regrets in life actually. I try not to have any at all. It would be pretty tough to go about, you know, life whether I’m on the court or away from it if I feel like I didn’t do enough at a certain moment in my life. You move on. Of course I thought I earned my position to be in the final. I did put up a fight obviously today against her; it was not enough. But she’s been playing really great tennis. Certainly not an excuse, but she is playing extremely well."
