Ruthless Maria Sharapova demolishes Venus Williams

TALL, blonde and merciless.
It could've been Steffi Graf on Rod Laver Arena last night but it was Maria Sharapova who brushed aside modern great Venus Williams in 79 cut-throat minutes.
The glamorous Russian destroyed Williams 6-1 6-3 to equal Graf's 1989 Australian Open record by reaching the fourth round dropping only four games.
Sharapova has been in irresistible form in Melbourne, becoming the first person to score two "double bagel" 6-0 6-0 grand slam wins in a row since 1985 in her opening two matches.
A few years ago last night's was probably a match worthy of the final. But battles with illness and age have left Williams struggling to match it with the pacesetters of the women's game.
The 32-year-old is only seeded 25, but the seven-time grand slam winner has been climbing back up the rankings, and was expected to offer more resistance.
"When we both looked at the draw, it was certainly the match-up both of us were looking forward to. I was really excited to play her," Sharapova said.
"She's a great champion and won many more grand slams than I have. No matter what her ranking, she is so hard to play."
Sharapova, however, is a class above and is making everyone look amateurish. She had no lead-in matches to the tournament - pulling out of the Brisbane International and a Korean exhibition event with an inflamed collarbone - yet the four games she surrendered last night to Williams were the first for the tournament.
"I wish I would have played Brisbane," she said.
"I went there and tried to play but in the end I came to Melbourne early and got quite a few practice matches against some fine Australian boys."
Last night's result wasn't as embarrassing as Williams' first round exit last year from Wimbledon, where she is a five-time champion.
But that was only six tournaments back from seven months out fighting the immune illness, Sjogren's Syndrome. Williams was outside the top 100 this time last year but has fought her way back towards the top.
As Sharapova was serving for the match at 5-1, and on the verge of equalling Mary Pierce's world record of only dropping two games on the way to a grand slam final 16, Williams withstood another barrage to win her third game of the match and then broke for a fourth.
There is still some fight in the veteran American.
Sharapova faces unseeded Belgian Kirsten Flipkens tomorrow for a shot at a 17th quarter-final in a major.
The other big-name battle saw Ana Ivanovic bury the rift with fierce rival Jelena Jankovic.
The former French Open champion defeated her fellow Serb 7-5 6-3 to advance to round four, in a match that produced only shades of the animosity of past clashes between the pair.

Это было таким тяжким трудом добыто, что сейчас трудно даже думать, как такое возможно.
Но оно случилось, этого многие ждали, но и боялись, не зная, что мы со всем этим будем делать...
раньше, но имеем что имеем...
