THE WOMEN

TOP HALF, FIRST QUARTER

As good as Victoria Azarenka is on hard courts, I’m getting the feeling that she will not quickly bash her way to the quarters, because I don’t think she’s in a  great mental space, even though RedFoo just showed up. Jaime Hampton or Ula Radwanska could give her trouble in the third round, and Roberta Vinci could certainly trouble her in the fourth round. Then a huge test could come should Caroline Wozniacki, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova or Sara Errani get there, provided she picks up her game again. A match between former BFFs Azarenka and Wozniacki would be delicious. Even though Caro’s form has been way below Vika’s over the past year, I still think she’s in her head.

FIRST ROUND POPCORN MATCH

Wozniacki vs. Sabine Lisicki. Recall when Sabine bumped her at Wimbledon? I’m sure if they ever made up.

TOP HALF, 2ND QUARTER

Serena Williams is by far the favorite in this tournament and while her draw isn’t simple, if things play to recent form she will be back in the semis in no time. Yaroslava Shvedova nearly upset her at Wimbledon, but that was before Serena became confident and the Kazak  has not been a force in hard courts. Neither the newly engaged Maria Kirilenko – who has started the season poorly – or the yet to really develop Yanina Wickmayer will pose much a threat in R4.

However, four players might be able to pound their way into a interesting contest with her in the quarters: Nadia Petrova (serve), Sloane Stephens (speed and groundies), Laura Robson (raw power ). and Petra Kvitova, if she can remember that she’s actually Petra Kvitova.

FIRST ROUND POPCORN MATCH

Robson vs. Melanie Oudin. Robson may have lost to Sloane Stephens last week, but the contest was fairly close and she’s continued to improve. Oudin still hasn’t rediscovered her 2009 form, but she has gotten some confidence back and can still counterpunch successfully id Robson goes off a bit.

BOTTOM HALF, FIRST QUARTER

After watching Aga Radwanska smoke the Sydney field, I have to make her the favorite to get through to the semis. I cannot see Mona Barthel hitting though her in R3 or Ana Ivanovic or Jelena Jankovic skipping around with her for three sets either in R4, but what I can see is Li Na taking her down in the quarters, and could even see Samantha Stosur doing the same if Stosur manages to catch fire in Melbourne for the first time . I’ll take Li over Stosur though, who may not survive her first two rounds anyway. A Li vs. Ag clash would pit the two players outside of the WTA’s Big 3 most capable of winning the title against each other. Perfect.

FIRST ROUND POPCORN MATCH

Stosur vs. KaiChen Chang. Stosur lost to Chang in Osaka, and given she’s had so much trouble dealing with her nerves in Melbourne, this will be a huge test. Should she get through there handily, she might be able to best Zheng Jie, who beat her in Sydney, in R2. If not, she’ll be ripe for the picking.

BOTTOM HALF, 2nD QUARTER

Don’t think that No.2 Maria Sharapova has a easy draw because she does not. Having to potentially face Venus Williams in the third round is a very rough if Venus is feeling right,  as is possibly going up against Klara Zakopalova in the fourth round, who almost upset her at Roland Garros and has become the favorite in her section after Dominica Cibulkova’s Sydney meltdown. Then there’s a potential quarter against Angie Kerber the quarters, whom if she can shake off whatever is bothering her mentally, can put up a defensive wall, and maybe even choose to play some offense. I have to tip Sharapova to get through to the semis as her form has been mostly excellent the past year, but I wouldn’t be surprised at all if she lost before then.

FIRST ROUND POPCORN MATCH

Cibulkova vs. Ashley Barty: How is the Slovakian going to respond mentally to being double bageled by Radwanska in the Sydney final? We’ll find out quickly when she faces the steady and scrappy Aussie baby teen on Hisense Arena. Don’t expect it to be easy and it could be a another disaster for Domi.
