What was your most embarrassing moment on court?

When I was playing Ana Ivanovic at the Fed Cup, I forgot the score and at the end of the match, I went back to my bench to switch sides. I saw people standing up, I didn’t understand what was going on, everyone was clapping. When I got ready to go back on court, I finally realized that I had won and the match was over. That was pretty embarrassing.

What was the worst excuse you ever had for missing a practice session?

Saying I had a fever (smiles).

What was your craziest night on the tour?

On the court, it was a doubles match at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. The match went on until one in the morning, it was crazy. Otherwise, it’d be this one time at Doha – at the hotel where I was staying, there were no more rooms, and so they gave me a huge suite with at least 30 sofas. I was with a bunch of friends and we had a great time.

Who did you dream of kissing when you were a teenager?

Marat Safin, and he knows it!

Which locker room joke do you regret?

I make a lot of jokes, all of the time. I don’t regret any, it’s not my style.

Are you jealous of another player and why?

I wouldn’t call it jealousy, but rather strong admiration for Nadal. I really respect the way he fights for every point, no matter the score, his opponent or the situation.

What was the biggest lie you ever told a journalist?

I never lie to the press. Either I say what I have to say, or I keep my mouth shut when journalists ask me about things I don’t want to talk about. If I don’t say what they want to hear, they’ll find another way of getting the answers they want, so I prefer to say nothing. It’s better.

The craziest spending spree you went on that you later regretted?

I buy a lot of clothes and, with time, I’ve learnt that quality is better than quantity. Sometimes I used to buy clothes that I disliked afterwards. No longer! I buy less, but I only buy beautiful things.

What is the most embarrassing song on your MP3 player?

It’s love or hate with me. If people don’t like the music I do, I’m not going to hide myself away or be bothered by it. I don’t want to change for other people, I am what I am and you take it or you leave it. At the moment, I listen a lot to two Russian rap groups, Guf and Basta. I also listen to Rihanna and 50 Cent.  

What was your most stupid nickname?

I hate “Kutzy” but unfortunately I’m used to it now.

The craziest thing you’ve done to attract a boy?

I’m a sensible girl, I behave myself (smiles). If I like a boy, I go and tell him, it’s as simple as that.

Who is the person that you never had the guts to talk to, either on the circuit or elsewhere?

50 Cent, I only ever talked to him on the phone once. I’ve never seen him in person, and I’ve never been able to go to one of his concerts. But one of my girlfriends knows him, so it shouldn’t be too much of a challenge. 

When have you used your star status to get special treatment?

I was dying to get the 27th model of an extremely limited edition phone. 27 is my lucky number. There were, like, 100 phones available, and I got number 26. I managed to find out who in Russia had number 27 and I went to see him at his work. I told him I was a tennis player and that I could get him tickets to matches if he traded phones with me. I gave it all I could so I could get my way (smiles).
