В соревнованиях примут участие восемь лучших пар по итогам сезона. Кроме россиянок на итоговый турнир уже отобрались победительницы прошлогоднего турнира Мартина Хингис (Швейцария)/Саня Мирза (Индия) и француженки Каролин Гарсия/Кристина Младенович.
В сентябре россиянки не смогли выйти в финал Открытого чемпионата США, проиграв в полуфинале американке Бетани Маттек-Сандс и чешке Люции Шафаржовой.
Итоговый турнир WTA пройдет с 23 по 30 октября в Сингапуре. Для Макаровой и Весниной это будет четвертое подряд выступление на турнире. Лучшего результата россиянки добились в 2013 году, когда дошли до финала, где уступили Пэн Шуай (Китай) и Си Сувэй (Тайвань).

Международная федерация тенниса (ITF) 8 июня дисквалифицировала Шарапову на два года за употребление мельдония, срок дисквалификации отсчитывается с 26 января 2016 года. Позже 29-летняя теннисистка подала апелляцию в CAS.
Позже CAS объявил, что Шарапова и ITF договорились отложить рассмотрение апелляции до сентября в связи с вопросами, требующими дополнительного времени для их выполнения и реакции на доказательства, а также проблемами с графиком. Ожидалось, что решение будет опубликовано до 19 сентября.
"Я не жду решения CAS по делу Марии Шараповой до 19 сентября", - написал Хэггерти в сообщении корреспонденту "Р-Спорт".

ITF 8 июня дисквалифицировала Шарапову на 2 года за употребление мельдония, срок дисквалификации отсчитывается с 26 января 2016 года. После этого 29-летняя теннисистка подала апелляцию в CAS. Впоследствии источник, знакомый с ситуацией, заявил "Р-Спорт", что срок дисквалификации будет сокращен на год. Таким образом, Шарапова сможет принять участие в турнире в Санкт-Петербурге в феврале 2017 года.
"Мы готовы пригласить Марию, ждем с нетерпением сокращения срока ее дисквалификации. Я думаю, для Марии будет очень важно вернуться в тур и сыграть дома перед своей публикой.
