The two have some history together, dating back even before they were both in New York at the same time.

Appearing on an NHL on TSN panel prior to being hired by the Rangers in February 2009, Tortella was overly critical of Avery, who at the time was with the Dallas Stars and had spoken about an ex-girlfriend in an unflattering light.
