Europa League: Rubin progress halted in Greece by man-of-the-match Roy Carrol

Northern Irish goalkeeper Roy Carrol was the difference in Rubin Kazan’s Europa League tie against Greek side Olympiacos, which ended with a 1-0 win to the home side.

Olympiacos ace Raffik Djebbour’s inadvertent header doubled his side’s aggregate lead on 14 minutes, but it was the formidable performance by the veteran goalkeeper that prevented the Russians from turning the tie around.

As in the first legs, Carrol’s heroics, including a point-blank save from Cesar Navas and a block on Sharonov’s long-range effort, kept the Greeks’ goal safe and allowed them to progress to the next stage of the competition.

After the match Rubin boss Kurban Berdyev gave credit to the opposition goalie, who saved a penalty in the first leg.
