World Figure Skating Championships in Tokyo Postponed

The 2011 International Skating Union World Figure Skating Championships in Tokyo, in which Kim Yu-na had planned to make her comeback to competitive skating, has been postponed amid the aftermath of a devastating earthquake and tsunami in Japan. The ISU announced on its website that "in consultation and agreement with the Japan Skating Federation and in line with the advice of the Japanese authorities" it has concluded that the staging of the event as scheduled in Tokyo on March 21-27 "is not possible." The ISU World Team Trophy in Figure Skating, which had been slated to take place in Yokohama from April 14 to 17, has also been postponed indefinitely. According to Japan′s Jiji Press News, the ISU is considering hosting the Championships in April, and if that option fails the event is likely to be cancelled.

Japanese media also reported that the country′s professional baseball league may adjust its schedule to play games during the day rather than at night to save electricity. The Japanese government has announced planned power cuts to prepare for a potential shortage of electricity. The league has called an emergency board meeting for Tuesday to discuss reducing the number of night games and the possible rescheduling of the season opener. Japan′s football league, the J League, on Monday announced the cancellation of 41 games planned for this month, including the Nabisco Cup. Japan′s LPGA Tour also called off the T-Point Ladies Tournament originally scheduled to kick off on Friday, after suspending the PRGR Ladies Cup after just one round last Friday.
