Asian Le Mans 2014 will start in Korea with 3 Hours of Inje

The opening round round of the 2014 Asian Le Mans Series will take place at the Inje Speedway (South Korea) on July 20. 3 Hours of Inje will be the 2nd Asian Le Mans race after last years' debut at brand new international motorsport circuit located about 2 hours drive to the east from Seoul. The Asian Le Mans Series will expand to a five-race schedule, while also seeing a change in its class structure for 2014 year, series officials announced on Dec 7, 2013. The 2014 calendar will make return visits to its existing venues at Inje (Korea), Fuji (Japan) and Sepang (Malaysia), while adding a new round at the Shanghai International Circuit.

All races will remain three hours in length, with teams being offered a more cost-effective travel and logistics package, which will be equivalent to this year’s four-round championship. There has also been a shakeup in the class structure, with the launch of the CN category for FIA CN2-homologated cars. It replaces the LMPC class, which failed to attract any entries in the series’ first year.

Additionally, the GTE and GTC classes will be merged into a single GT class, which will also be open to JAF GT300-spec machinery. All three platforms will be performance balanced by the ACO. The LMP2 category, which features three entries in this weekend’s season finale in Malaysia, remains unchanged for 2014.

At the end of the season, the Asian Le Mans Series will confer the following titles: trophies for the best drivers and teams in LM P2, CN, GT and GT Am. Three Asian Le Mans Series competitors will be invited to the 2015 24 Hours of Le Mans: the LM P2 winner, and the first and second in the GT class who will join the LM GTE grid at Le Mans.

The provisional schedule for 2014 is:

  • Inje, Korea: 20th July

  • Fuji, Japan: 31st August

  • Shanghai, China: 11th October

  • Buriram, Thailand: 23rd November

  • Sepang, Malaysia: 7th December

The five event season will be the third season of the Automobile Club de l'Ouest's Asian Le Mans Series. It is the fourth 24 Hours of Le Mans-based series created by the ACO, following the European Le Mans Series and the FIA World Endurance Championship.

Inje Speedium is a motor racing circuit in Inje County, South Korea. The circuit is part of a larger complex, named the Inje Auto Theme Park, that includes a hotel and condominiums. The main course is 4.207 kilometres (2.614 mi), but can be split into separate 2.577-kilometre (1.601 mi) and 1.375-kilometre (0.854 mi) circuits.

The track opened with a round of the Japanese Super Taikyu series on 25 May 2013, and held the opening round of the 2013 Asian Le Mans Series season on 4 August 2013 followed by first ever Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo Asia Series Race III Korea on Aug 11.
